SCOOTERS AND MOPEDS

As gas prices soar, so do sales and interest in mopeds and scooters. Apart from the weather in the Eugene metro area, the quantity of small surface streets makes commuting around town easy for riders of scooters and mopeds. The resurgence in these vehicles with small engines and smaller diameter tires is similar to the popularity they enjoyed in the 1970's. Recently, the city of Eugene banned the use of motorized two-wheel vehicles in bike lanes and on bicycle paths. Even this change in rules has not stopped the sales of scooters and mopeds, although it did slow sales of the smallest scooters that were more likely to be ridden on the local bike paths. It should be noted that there are actually some Vespa type scooters and more powerful mopeds which are fast enough to be used on expressways, highways and interstates. Fortunately for local scooter riders, it's pretty easy to avoid the few limited access roads in the Eugene and Springfield area.

As when purchasing any vehicle, it's always a good idea to shop around before making a decision. There are many different styles and sizes, which can range in price from one thousand to over five thousand dollars. Smaller scooters will obviously be more affordable, and will get the best gas mileage. The bigger scooters will cost more and use a bit more gas, but they will also keep up with traffic much better and will generally be more stable on bumpy streets and broken pavement. One of the coolest things about scooters, besides their gas sipping ways, is their storage compartments. Even the smallest scooters usually have a space under the seat where you can put your lunch, some books, or a spare helmet. The larger scooters have some pretty serious luggage capacity, enough so that many people are actually use these scooters for long distance, multi-state touring.

The naked Suzuki Burgman 650 (lower photo) sure looks like a motorcycle, but with a continously variable transmission and low maintenance drive train, riding it is a twist-and-go affair!

With it's clothes on (top photo) it's once again an overgrown scooter, with enough power to handle freeway riding, and enough storage capacity and comfort for a coast to coast tour.

While there are some great deals to be found on new machines, don't overlook the possibility of purchasing a used moped or scooter. We have researched and offer a list of local shops and regional auction web-sites where you can purchase an economical mode of transportation.
